Peace Lily Chopin
Spathiphyllum Wallisii Chopin
Spathiphyllum 'Chopin' originating from South America is commonly known by the name Peace Lily. It is characterised by lush, bushy, dark green, oval leaves that stand upright and can at times arch slightly. In the warmer seasons these beauties tend to create a flower known as a spadix. The flowers are white, cream or green, and resemble arum lilies. The spandex is an inflorescence spike with small blooms that grow out a fleshy stem and are surrounded by a long white, yellow or green-coloured structure resembling a modified leaf known as a spathe. This is a perfectly suited plant for all interiors and has an added bonus of being a natural air purifier. It absorbs certain contaminants from the air and leaves a lovely faint scent. They tolerate neglect well, making them a popular houseplant and will grow well in shaded conditions but flower better in brighter conditions.
Position:
Spathiphyllum will tolerate low light, but need some brightness from a window or a lamp. Without this they are unlikely to bloom much, if at all. They are very easy-care plants and will tolerate almost any lighting conditions except direct sun, and tend to bloom more the more light they receive.
Water:
Keep the soil evenly moist, not wet! Water thoroughly when the soil just becomes dry but do not let the plant sit in water. Alternatively, you can use a humidity tray, half-filled with water, then place your plant pot on top. Top up the water if necessary when watering your plant. Make sure the water level stays below the top of the pebbles/Leca balls so the plant roots can breathe. The humidity from the tray will keep the leaves lush and the roots moist. Avoid allowing the plant to wilt, although Spathiphyllum will recover amazingly from wilting very badly, you’re likely to see a lot of yellow leaves as a consequence if it happens too often.
Feed:
Feed during the growing season with pure organic seaweed fertiliser to half the recommended strength. Do not feed during the winter months at all, as these aren’t hungry plants and you could risk damage to its roots. Use our Organic seaweed fertiliser for best results.
Humidity
Normal room humidity is fine however, we recommend you can use a humidity tray, half-filled with water, then place your plant pot on top.Top up the water if necessary when watering your plant. Make sure the water level stays below the top of the pebbles/Leca balls so the plant roots can breathe. The humidity from the tray will keep the leaves lush and the roots moist.
Soil:
Spathiphyllum thrive well in a loose, aerated mix with plenty of peat - Use our Spathiphyllum soil mix for best results.
