Mistletoe Cactus

Rhipsalis Baccifera

Unlike desert cacti, the Mistletoe Cactus grows in the tropical rainforests of Florida, Mexico and Brazil. In the wild it is known to grow epiphytically and can be found clinging to tree crotches, in branch nooks, and nestled in rock crevasses and is characterised by its pencil thin succulent stems that can grow over 2m in length. The thick skin of the stems do not produce thorns, but it do have tiny bumps on the surface. The Mistletoe Cactus is easy to grow and has very minimal needs. Aside from the attractive foliage, they also offer the added bonus of blooms and fruit in optimal conditions. It is the perfect home interior feature plant if you're looking for something that drapes beautifully and gives an elegant and minimal vibe.

Position:

Unlike desert cacti, the Mistletoe Cactus doesn’t like direct sunlight. It can handle short periods of time in the sun but prolonged exposure will cause burning on the foliage. Place it in a brightly lit spot with stippled or indirect sunlight.

Water:

Water once the surface of the soil is dry during the growing season. Maintain slightly moist soil. Reduce watering in winter. Take care not to over water (see Common Problems below).

Feed:

Feed monthly during the spring and summer with a water-soluble plant food diluted to 1/2 the recommended strength - Use our organic seaweed fertiliser for best results.

Humidity

Normal room humidity is fine however, we recommend you use a humidity tray. Fill a tray or dish with pebbles and half-fill with water, then place your plant pot on top. Top up the water if necessary when watering your plant. Make sure the water level stays below the top of the pebbles so the plant roots can breathe. The humidity from the tray will keep the leaves lush and the roots moist.

Soil:

Rhipsalis like to be relatively dry and rely on air moisture when the soil gets dry, therefore a fast draining and very aerated soil mix is recommended - Use our succulent soil mix for best results.Mistletoe cacti will be happy in the same pot for a year or two. Repot it when you notice it’s running out of space in its pot and roots start growing out of the drainage holes.

Common Problems:

Wilting & mushy stems? This is usually a sign of over watering and may have caused root rot. There is no way to cure root rot so if this happens remove the affected pieces and rotten roots, and repot the healthy parts. Make sure to use a fast draining and aerated soil mix. Decrease your watering schedule, allowing the top of the soil to dry between waterings.

Crispy tips? This is a sign of under watering or insufficient humidity. Increase your watering schedule and avoid placing your plant in dry air such as near heating or air conditioning vents. It may be beneficial to use a humidity tray as described above.
