Dieffenbachia 'Tropic Marianne'
Dieffenbachia or ‘Dumbcanes’ as they are commonly known as are is a South American native tropical plant found mostly in Brazil. Its most distinctive features are its beautiful ovate, broad bright leaves, with dark green emerald around the edges; and luminous lime to white colouring in the centre. Dieffenbachia are a great house plant for beginners due to its very easy care and ease at adapting to new environments and will give a full and lush tropical feel to any area it is placed.
The colloquial name Dumbcane comes from the literal speechless effect of eating the plant due to its toxicity. The cells of the plant contain stinging crystals that inflame the mouth and throat. For this reason Dieffenbachia should be kept away from small children and pets.
Position:
Dieffenbachia plants are a preferred houseplant due to their versatility with regards to light requirements. During the warmer months it prefers to be placed in stippled indirect light, but can grow well in shadier spots too. It is recommended that the plant be moved to a brighter spot during the winter months to help with drying out the soil between watering. The plant will grow toward the brightest light source it is exposed to, so it is recommended that it is rotated periodically to keep the plant growth balanced and lush.
Water:
Dieffenbachia are not fussy when it comes to watering and will generally droop when water is required. A good measure is to dip a finger into the top of the soil to about a knuckle distance down. If the soil is dry then it will need a good soak. it is important not to over water dieffenbachia as they are prone to root rot if there is not enough aeration to the roots.
Feed:
Feed monthly during the spring and summer with a water-soluble plant food diluted to 1/2 the recommended strength - Use our organic seaweed fertilizer for best results.
Humidity:
Normal room humidity is fine however, we recommend you use a humidity tray filled with pebbles or leca balls and half-filled with water, with your plant pot placed on top. Top up the water if necessary when watering your plant but make sure the water level stays below the top of the pebbles/leca balls so the plant roots can breathe. The humidity from the tray will keep the leaves lush and the roots moist.
Soil:
Dieffenbachia are similar to Aglaonema with regards to its soil requirements and thrive well in a loose, aerated mix - Use our Aglaonema soil mix for best results.
Toxicity:
It is important to note that Dieffenbachias are toxic to animals and humans if ingested and should be kept away from young children and pets. We also recommend washing your hands after handling, as this has been known to cause irritation after contact with skin and eyes. If ingested by a human, call the New Zealand Poisons Centre for advice on 0800 764 766 or if symptoms are severe call 111.
