Dioscorea Elephants Foot

Dioscorea Elephantipes is a plant that falls into the Caudiciform family. Caudiciform is characterised by the plant's shape and the way it grows. It forms a Caudex which is a term used to describe the fat, swollen trunk that forms above ground. The foliage and vines shoot from the top of the trunk, and when given support can grow into one of the most interesting plants you will ever have in your home. Dioscorea Elephantipes is native to South Africa where it grows in very arid conditions making it an ideal houseplant to grow indoors. Dioscorea Elephantipes is often compared to an elephant's foot or tortoise shell because of its uniquely textured trunk/bulb.

Position:

Dioscorea can be grown both indoors and out, if grown indoors should be placed in a warm brightly lit area with no direct or stippled light. If grown outdoors should be placed in a semi-shaded spot.

Water:

When your plant is actively producing vines and leaves make sure that your watering routine is consistent and regular, however it is important to let the soil dry out completely before watering again. Dioscorea tend to go through short periods of dormancy during the winter months. You will recognise that your plant is going into dormancy when the vines and foliage start to dry up, turn yellow and drop off. When this happens it is important to reduce watering significantly and keep your plant somewhere cool and dry. When your plant starts to show new foliage and vine growth in the warmer months, move your plant back to a bright spot and begin watering more frequently.

Feed:

Feed monthly during the spring and summer with a water-soluble plant food diluted to 1/2 the recommended strength - Use our organic seaweed fertilizer for best results.

Humidity:

Normal room humidity is fine.

Soil:

Dioscorea are and can be regarded as a type of succulent and are similar with regards to soil requirements. - Use our succulent soil mix for best results.
